Dunoon Community Council is looking for new members from across the community.
We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds, and we are particularly keen to encourage more younger residents to get involved so that the Community Council better reflects the people who live, work and study in Dunoon.
You do not need previous experience in local government or community work. You do not need to be an expert in council procedures.
You simply need to care about Dunoon, have ideas, and be willing to get involved.
Dunoon Community Council represents the views and interests of people living in the Dunoon area.
We provide a link between the community, Argyll and Bute Council, public organisations, local groups and other bodies that make decisions affecting our town.
Our role includes raising local concerns, responding to consultations, supporting community initiatives and helping make sure that the views of people in Dunoon are heard.
We discuss and become involved in a wide range of issues, including:
Sometimes that means raising a problem with the appropriate authority. At other times it means working with organisations, developing ideas, supporting projects or helping bring different parts of the community together.
Being a Community Councillor is not simply about attending meetings. Members have the opportunity to become involved in real issues and projects affecting Dunoon.
Some of the areas we are currently involved with include:
Transport affects almost everyone in Dunoon.
We raise and discuss concerns relating to local bus services, roads, ferries, accessibility, connections and other transport issues affecting residents and visitors.
We work to make sure that local experiences and concerns are heard by the organisations responsible for providing and improving these services.
Dunoon's waterfront is one of the town's greatest assets.
The Community Council is involved in discussions and projects concerning moorings and the opportunities they could create for Dunoon, including encouraging more visiting boats, supporting local businesses and making better use of our waterfront.
We take an active interest in environmental matters affecting Dunoon.
This can include local environmental concerns, public spaces, waste, biodiversity, maintenance, sustainability and proposals that could affect the character and quality of our surroundings.
The redevelopment of Morag's Fairy Glen is another project in which the Community Council is involved.
Projects such as this provide an opportunity to improve local spaces, protect features that are important to the community and help create places that residents and visitors can enjoy for years to come.
And these are only a few examples.
New issues arise all the time, and Community Councillors can help decide what the Council should focus on and where we can make the greatest difference.
Joining the Community Council gives you an opportunity to do more than simply raise a concern.
You can help follow that concern through, contribute ideas and be part of finding solutions.

A Community Council works best when it includes people with different experiences, ages, backgrounds and perspectives.
We therefore want to hear from everyone who cares about Dunoon.
We would particularly welcome more younger people becoming involved.
If you are 16, 17, 18 or in your twenties, you are just as entitled to have a voice on the future of your town as anyone else.
Issues such as transport, housing, employment opportunities, education, recreation, the environment and the future of Dunoon directly affect younger residents, and those views should be represented when these subjects are discussed.
You do not have to wait until you are older to make a difference in your community.
We understand that people have jobs, studies, families and other commitments.
Community Councillors should be able to give a minimum of around 2 hours per month to Community Council business.
Some members choose to become more involved in particular projects, while others contribute primarily through meetings and issues that interest them.
You decide how much additional time you are able to give.
To stand as a Community Councillor, you must:

You do not need political experience.
You do not need to belong to a political party.
You do not need to have served on a committee before.
You just need an interest in your community and a willingness to contribute.
Perhaps there is something in Dunoon you think could be improved.
Perhaps there is an issue you feel is being overlooked.
Perhaps you have an idea for the town.
Or perhaps you have found yourself saying:
"Someone should do something about that."

If you would like to become a Community Councillor, the next step is simple.
You will need to complete a Co-Option Form and submit it to the Secretary of Dunoon Community Council.
